Charter flights

If you are going on a package holiday, a "charter" flight is generally included in the price. Charter flights are organised by tour operators to supply transport to holiday destinations. They sometimes get a bad press for overcrowding, discomfort and delays. But they are usually cheaper than scheduled flights and can be better for families as they offer a a variety of bookable extras. If you have a query about your flight, contact your tour operator first as it will be able to supply most answers. Some charter airlines offer flight-only tickets which you can book without paying for a whole holiday.

Scheduled flights

If you decide against a package and plan your holiday flights and accommodation separately you will probably find yourself on a scheduled flight. These are organised by scheduled airlines. They fly throughout the year with a "scheduled" departure time and tend to be more comfortable and cost a bit more than charter flights. You don't usually have to pay extra for meals and services but seats together, bulkhead seats and bottle warming cannot always be guaranteed. Contact the airline if you have any queries. Some tour operators offer you the choice of charter or scheduled flights.

Flight tips

• Look for flights that won't upset your baby's routine. Night flights are good for long-haul journeys.

• Explain you have a child when you book. Prebook all you can, note down any reference numbers or take the assistant's name and call at least 24 hours before departure to check your requests are "on the computer".

• Ask for extra legroom. Bulkhead seats at the front of the plane offer more space.

• Prepare for delays. Have extra
food, a change of clothes and nappies in your hand luggage.

• Ask if the airline has a play-area at the airport. Some, like British Airways and American Airlines have them in their lounges.

• Avoid sedatives: they can have the reverse effect. Camomile tea in a sucky cup is a good natural alternative.

• Prepare individual nappy sacks with a nappy and wipes, so you don't have to haul your entire handluggage to the loo.

• Ask to be moved to a spare row of seats if the flight isn't full.

• If you have to change planes, ask for a courtesy cart between gates.

• Feed your baby at take-off and landing for comfort and to equalise the ears.
