Our Best Airlines for Families guide is written by Chloë Bryan-Brown, a freelance journalist who edits the family travel pages of The Times and is mother of three-year-old Peggy.

Flying with children can be stressful, partly because so much of the experience is out of your control. My worst flights with my daughter were when she was 10 months and we were delayed on Barcelona runway in stifling heat, and a packed charter flight from Greece when she was 17 months and had a tummy upset.

Knowing what to expect in advance can reduce stress. My advice is to have a list of "services" to hand when you make your reservation and prebook as many as possible. Services include seating together:- this is not, unbelievably, routine and you may find yourself in a different row from your child if you don't prebook - sky cots (sometimes called bassinets), extra legroom in the bulkhead seats at the front of the plane, kids' meals, kids' goody bags, bottle warming and changing facilities. You should also ask whether you have to check in your buggy or whether you can take it to the aircraft. Being able to keep it with you is more convenient for you and means your baby has somewhere to sit and sleep in peace between check-in and boarding. Being allowed to board first gives you time to get your baby settled before take-off.
