Working out doesn't mean you have to part with your baby. Try these suggestions for enjoying exercise together:
• Walk or hike with her in a front pack or take her for walks near your home in her buggy. See our article on walking for general information on how far and how fast to go.
• When she gets a bit older, you can jog with your baby in a special buggy -- but wait until she's at least eight months old and sitting up before taking her in a bike trailer or cycle carrier. Younger babies lack the neck strength to hold their heads upright and to support the weight of safety helmets.
• In some cities, you can also find walking groups. You could use the buggy with the baby in it as a resistance tool.
• You might also want to consider purchasing a treadmill, stair stepper, cross-country ski machine, or other piece of fitness equipment for home use. These machines are great for getting back into shape in the privacy of your own home, at your own pace, and on your own schedule. Remember, the effects of the hormone relaxin stay in your body for between three and five months postnatally, so don't overdo it and watch your technique.
• Another option is to use an exercise video at home with your baby nearby. Just make sure she's safely sleeping or secure in a baby seat, high chair, or playpen where there is no danger of tripping over her. Chances are, she'll get a kick out of watching you dance! Always store potentially dangerous equipment out of her reach when not in use.
• You can work out with your baby. Try abdominal head and shoulder raises with your baby lying on your thighs, or press-ups with your baby lying on a rug between your hands.
